New State Historical Marker will recognize the Marianna Mine Disaster

Marianna Mine Disaster Historical Marker

On March 14, 2019 The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission announced the approval of 18 new Pennsylvania Historical Markers. The signs are seen throughout the state and mark events, people, and locations in the states history.

The Marianna Mine Explosion nomination was approved by the PHMC. The explosion occurred in 1908 and according to records was one of the worst disasters in U.S history and Washington county history. This was one of several disaster in the early 20th century that led to the establishment of the United States Bureau of Mines.

A fall ceremony is scheduled for September 28, 2019 at 11 a.m at the corner of Beeson Avenue in Marianna borough. Thank you to the The Marianna Community Public Library, Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, Marianna Borough, and those who donated their time and money to make the marker a reality.

Maybe our future doesn't have to be based upon the past.
