Northern Cardinal
Male cardinals are named for their bright red color. Female cardinals are a soft tan color, and they have bright orange beaks and red trim along their wings. Cardinals mate for life. Both males and females may sing year-round. The Northern Cardinal is the state bird for Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky.
