Original Franklin School-1820?
Franklin School, Amity, Pa. West Bethlehem twp. Little Creek Road. Postcard 1941.
West Bethlehem township had five other schools: Highland Ridge School, Wherry School, Barr's School, Ulery School, Sowers School. All were one-room schools. And West Zollarsville school, currently the Marianna Community Public Library and Twp office, was a multi-room school.
Franklin school no longer stands. As told from an elderly resident, many kids had to walk a mile to get to the school. All 8 grades went to Franklin school, some classes had 6 students. Most people in the area were poor.
Students had to carry drinking water from a farm; the teacher would send the boys to get water in a five-gallon can. The coal shanty is on the left. An outhouse was behind the school under the big oak tree that still sits there today in 2018. Franklin cemetery is next to the coal shanty.
