Snow Ice Cream Recipe

Did you ever have snow ice cream as a kid? There’s something quietly magical about the first snowfall, the kind that takes you back to a time when winter felt slower and sweeter. Standing in the kitchen, scooping fresh snow into a bowl for snow ice cream, it feels like borrowing a moment from another time. Just simple, soft snow, a little sweetness, and the comfort of being indoors while winter gathers outside the window. Snow ice cream isn’t fancy, and it isn’t meant to be. It’s one of those small winter rituals that reminds you how much joy can come from the simplest things.

The recipe I’m sharing here isn’t my mother’s—it’s one I make myself. It’s simple, vegan, and really tasty:

  • 8 cups snow

  • 3/4 can canned coconut milk (scoop mostly the creamy part)

  • 2 cups powdered sugar

  • 1 tsp vanilla

Blend the coconut cream, sugar, and vanilla until smooth, then gently fold in the snow until fully combined. Serve immediately and enjoy!

There are plenty of other snow ice cream recipes online if you want to try different variations, but this one works well for me.

Note & Disclaimer: Air quality has changed since the mid-20th century in complicated ways. In the United States and many industrial regions, air is generally cleaner today than it was in the 1950s due to environmental regulations that reduced soot, lead, and smog. At the same time, modern pollution includes different contaminants — such as vehicle emissions and fine particulate matter — that weren’t as prevalent or well understood decades ago, which makes it wise to be mindful about where and how snow or wild foods are collected. The content of this article is for educational purposes only. Before using or ingesting any wild herb, plant, or naturally collected food for edible or medicinal purposes, consult a physician, medical herbalist, or other qualified professional. Always forage cautiously, never consume anything you are unsure of, and avoid harvesting more than half of any given patch.

Maybe our future doesn't have to be based upon the past.
