Old Horse and Buggy Road
1903 Topography map. It may take a bit of studying to understand what's being shown. This is before the mine came, so only about 1-2 houses exist on "Marianna Hill" (Of course, at this time it wasn't Marianna hill. This area was part of West Bethlehem Township). In green is the old road marked. Next door in Zollarsville, you can see were many homes were, as this was the bustling area that included a grist mill, post office, hotel.
This old map shows what used to be an old road in Marianna. If you look at the photos here, the old road is marked in green. It is believed that this road stopped being used sometime shortly after the mine came to the area, so before 1910 sometime was its last use. The road was replaced with the road that runs along main street, which hadn't existed at the time? As seen from the maps I posted, the road ran semi-parallel to 10 mile road, then cut through the large slate dump (before it was there) and connected right where the Township building is now. Obviously the section on the slate dump is covered by hundreds of feet of slate, so it's gone, but the section that runs through the woods can still be seen. The start of the road on the 10 Mile road end is now covered by the brick house on the corner. You can even see an old pic from the early 1900s of telephone poles that ran along the road. In my pics, you can see these telephone poles nowadays, now broken and laying on the ground. Pretty cool though, this road was marked on all kinds of county maps and such from around 1900. A few residents said on this same horse and buggy road were initials carved in a tree.
Here is the aerial view of everything now. I marked where the old road used to run in green as well as a few other markings.
