W. S. George

In 1910 a lot was going on in Marianna. It was the year Marianna Borough was incorporated, and when a fire occurred at the arcade, discussion began regarding building a road along Ten Mile Creek.

This same year, not too far from here, a man named William Shaw George opened a manufacturing facility, Plant #2, in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. The company "The W.S. George Pottery Companyproduced semi-porcelain dinnerware, hotel ware, and toilet wares, like those seen here purchased locally at a thrift store.

In 1904 George purchased a pottery company in Ohio that he had previously leased from the Sebring Brothers. This is where Plant #1 was located. Plant #3 was built in Kittanning, Pennsylvania in 1914.
The "Derwood" name on the plate above is the name of the shape.

Oftentimes, you can find W. S. George pottery sold during Pike Days at yard sales, same for Sebring Pottery and Canonsburg China Company pottery.

The W. S Pottery Company remained in operation for nearly 60 years.

Canonsburg, as you may know, was the former home to a radium refining mill once visited by Marie Curie (Canonsburg mention).

If you happen to read the article above regarding Marie Curie, you may then want to visit HERE, and then HERE, just because the info is interesting if you don't already know it.

Maybe our future doesn't have to be based upon the past.
