Lovely is a Rose in Marianna

Last late fall, I propagated this miniature pink rose that was growing along a country road in Marianna. The rose I clipped was about 6". I put it in a pot under a clear bin all winter on the side of the house away from high winds. I watered it a few times over winter and when spring came I planted it. Isn't she lovely?

Left blooming alone;
All her lovely companions
Are faded and gone."  -Thomas Moore

I really didn't think it would make it through a long winter. Now I know how easy it is to use a plastic bin as a miniature greenhouse. The propagation of plants is one of my favorite pastimes. I've given away small trees and bushes when I get more than I want.

 Did you know you can also reuse the plastic containers that strawberries come in as a temporary greenhouse? Add dirt and tuck in some seeds over winter. Of course, recycle the container when done. Currently, I have several acorns planted in one; I'd put them in the ground if the risk of squirrels or moles finding them wasn't so great.

Maybe our future doesn't have to be based upon the past.
