January Thaw
January 4th was a good day to propagate and plant seeds outdoors. Today will be another good day, as it is expected to reach 49 degrees.
The January Thaw is when temperatures increase fairly suddenly. The warm period during this time is unlike any other period during the winter. The daylight temperatures for the New Year have yet to go below 32. Many gardeners know this is an ideal time to cut back plants and poke cut stems in the soil that you hope have taken root by spring.
Yesterday was muddy from the previous days' torrential rain, and it'll be muddy again today. Gardening boots are a must.
At this moment, nearing the hour of 11 a.m., the sun is bright and encouraging and already pouring its glorious spirit down on everything it touches. It is a perfect time to gather its shining burst of energy to fill the human spirit and body for the remainder of the season, with Vitamin D, motivation, and happiness that many of us lack from being indoors too long.
Enjoy the day if you are going out! And enjoy it if you are staying in. When inside, it is a good time to pick up a gardening book to read, dream, learn, plan, and get ideas before spring ever gets here. Our roots need feeding, too!
Happy New Year!
