Gertrude Gordon: Journalist Who Covered the 1908 Marianna Mine Disaster

Gertrude Gordon was a pioneering journalist in early 20th-century Pittsburgh, known for her emotionally resonant reporting. One of her most notable pieces covered the Marianna Mine explosion  of November 30, 1908 that killed 154  miners. Gordon framed her article around empathy.

Writing for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Gordon  also reported on social issues and women's rights, becoming an influential figure in a male-dominated industry. Though not as widely remembered today, her compassionate approach to journalism left a lasting impact on Pittsburgh's media landscape.
