WILLIAM HENRY HORNBAKE
COMPANY I, FIFTH WEST VIRGINIA CAVALRY. (Formerly Second Virginia Infantry).
Company raised from Greenfield (modern Coal Center) and California,
Washington Co., Pa., in July 1861. Mustered out in July 1864. Saw
action at Cross Keys, Cedar Mt., 2nd. Bull Run, Rocky Gap, Droop Mt.,
Salem Raid and Cloyd's Mt.
William Henry Hornbake is my 2nd great grandfather. His father, George, was one of the 6 founders of California, Pa. William lived in Greenfield (now Coal Center) with his wife Anna Llewellyn (from WV, some of her great uncles moved to West Bethlehem Township and Amwell Township, however) with their 5 children. William was a musician in the Civil War.
