President of the Farmers and Miners Bank of Marianna was David George Jones. Mr. Jones was also secretary, treasurer, and general manager of the Pittsburgh-Buffalo company, the company that opened up Marianna mine. Marianna hotel on right.

1911 Postcard

This was found in Marianna some time ago on an old horse and buggy trail in West Beth that closed in the 30's; some kids called this area   "Little Grand Canyon". Many older residents say there were also tree carvings on this same trail in the 50's, with lots of sweetheart initials.

The link has info on Acme deliveries to Marianna Google books-Pennsylvania county court reports volume 45.

From what I understand, Acme existed from 1907-1920 then reopened from 1933-34 maybe as Benteyville Brewing. At any rate, there is a wide gap of time due to prohibition in the U.S that was from 1920 to 1933. If Acme closed in 1920, and the road closed in 1930, then the bottle was likely thrown out along that road maybe by someone on a horse or someone sitting along the road looking out, before 1920. That is a guess. I do not know if Acme changed its name later to Bentleyville Brewing, but I don't think so. If anyone knows, feel free to add to the story with your comment.

The building that houses offices, residential apartments, Nova Care in Bentleyville is what remains of the original brewery building (and interestingly, I had an older sister who lived in an apt many years ago there, and at the time I had no idea it was part of the Acme building.)

As told by an 86 year old Marianna resident in 2017  (whom was also once a miner), when Marianna Miner families had gardens, a man on horse nicknamed "Black Dog" (along with other men on horses) would ride his horse around the neighborhood stopping at houses to make sure employees had no more than what was allowed planted in their gardens. If they did they had to pay the company the difference. The man "Black Dog" apparently had many nicknames, and no one liked him. He also had other nicknames and one was "Hail Storm". Every gardener needed a permit to have a garden.

Hotel Marianna

Inside was the Marianna & Scenery Hill Telephone Company from 1920 until shortly after WW2.

Miners Company Store

The store was divided into a meat market, furniture and hardware store, and a grocery and dry goods section. It became a Youth Center in its later years.

Historical Note on Kirby Town Hill (1980s–1990s):
The J & J Hotel, operated by James and Margaret Fuchick since 1948, stood as a local landmark on Kirby Town Hill. The building also contained a bar. Residents, including Marcia Fuchick Stauffer, recall that the bus stop was right next to J&J’s, and children would often run under the porch to the lower level, which had barred windows. Older kids jokingly called it a “secret jail,” but the bars were actually for security: the basement stored cases of beer for the bar, with a separate entrance used by distributors for deliveries. Locals also remembered the bar for its beautiful woodwork, and it served as a familiar landmark when giving directions.
