PUBLIC CEMETERIES LISTED BELOW:
Franklin cemetery(Quaker)
Franklin Cemetery if located off Little Creek road in West Bethlehem Township. It is an old cemetery, with most of the graves from the 1800's. A high infant mortality rate and the inability to combat diseases made death and mourning fairly common in the nineteenth century. Tuberculosis, typhoid, and cholera were diseases often took more than one family member in industrialized and overcrowded areas. According to documentation from usgwarchives for Washington county submitted by Glen L. Caldwell, the stone fence around the cemetery was built by Jake Bigler and D.R Smith who were married to sisters. "The stone was quarried on the George Donahoo bank (now the Kaub and Redfield) bank in back of the cemetery and right along a Delaware Indian Trail what went up the North Ten-Mile Creek on to the Old National Pike near Glyde." More information can also be found in "Miscellaneous Cemeteries of Washington County."

My research tells me that Magdalene Smith (Bigler) was born November 13th, 1766 and died in October 15th, 1829 (stone shows March as the month of death). Their daughters were Catherine Smith (1803-1871), Mary M. Smith (1804-1898), and son Israel Smith (1814-1892) and David Smith.

This mushroom-shaped stone there is not for someone buried there. It was placed there by land owner farmer Albert Donahoo as a marking for the graves so his tractor would not hit them. Later he decided to plant a pear tree there as a marking. As of 2021 the pear tree still stands and has pears on it in summer.
I do not know if the other 4 stones are markings for a grave or not.

Article unknown date (hope to get the who, what, where, and when of Daniel at some point). At this time I do not know if he is from this same Smith Family buried off Grable Road. These stones are on private property.
