Fact-Checking Fear in Local Online Groups
A post in a local Facebook Mon Valley group caught my eye. The post said:
“As the democrats move towards socialism/communist beliefs in extreme ways.
I want to remind people of two things1) socialism and communism are interchangeable. People will try and differentiate them... but they have the same end result.3) why isnt anyone enacting this in congress and cities?”
The post also included a picture of the Communist Control Act of 1954. I wanted to offer some clarification for those who might have read it:
-
This is not accurate. Socialism and communism are not interchangeable. Socialism can exist in democratic, capitalist societies, while communism calls for total state control of property and the economy.
-
This claim is misleading. The Communist Control Act is largely obsolete and would almost certainly violate the First Amendment today. That’s why no one is enforcing it.
Research shows that many people don’t realize they’re targets for manipulative posts in online groups. False or misleading content can spread quickly, especially in large communities where members trust each other. Studies have shown that misinformation—from political claims to COVID-19 conspiracies—often circulates through peer-to-peer sharing, with users unaware of how they are being influenced. That’s why fact-checking and thinking critically before sharing anything is so important.
