Coal’s Young Victims

Coal mining has taken countless lives—sometimes even those of children. While children no longer work in coal mines in most countries, the danger hasn’t disappeared. Families living near mines still face deadly accidents that claim young lives. And beyond coal, child labor in small-scale or informal mining—gold, cobalt, mica, gemstones—continues in parts of Africa, Asia, and South America, where work remains dangerous, unregulated, and too often fatal.

But even in coal’s long history, there are heartbreaking examples of children killed in mining disasters. You can read more about those tragedies here:
