MARCH-George W. Donahoo, age 72-73, passed away. He is buried at Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
MARCH-2nd-Noted in the Daily Herald this day is a mention that last week the 160 coke-ovens were fired up after not being fired for a year.
APRIL-1940 census has Albert Yonosik (Slovakian)living in Marianna Borough and working as a miner, with 4 children and wife, Mary.
MAY-17th-An announcement for the Annual school picnic at Kennywood is announced in the local newspaper, with the first train leaving at 8:10 a.m. with a cost of 80 cents. The returning train from Kennywood leaves at 7 p.m.MAY-29th-a Marianna borough shows a population decline of 272 persons since 1930.
JUNE-Ray Perkopff, 20, drowns in Ten Mile Creek mine dam of the Industrial Colleries.
JUNE-25th-Hannah Barr Craig, age 70, died in West Bethlehem Township.
NOVEMBER-1st Laborer Alexander Sabol Slavic-58 years old- had nonfatal accident in the mine.
NOVEMBER-27th-According to the Daily Republican Newspaper, four Marianna men were sentenced in Washington, charged with being engaged in thefts and one case burglary. The youngest was 19, according to the article, and the oldest 28. Nick Dankovich, Richard Morosky, and Walter Bagrich, were charged with robbery for breaking into the Spanish Lantern owned by Jessie Muchant, on July 7th, 1940. This was the only crime of Bagrich, but Dankovich and Morosky were charged with stealing $20 worth of copper junk from the Marianna Lumber Company.
DECEMBER-24th-Mines of the Industrial Colleries at Marianna, Cokeburg and Ellsworth issue their Christmas pay which is the largest in years.

Martin Niverth Sr.(Outside Foreman Coal Mine)and wife Mary, plus 4 children. Son John was blacksmith.
Jack Roule (Coal Mine Lampman) and wife Mary, plus 8 children.
Phillip Dillon was Day Mine Foreman at Marianna Mine.

Around this decade, give or take, there were a couple local elementary schools with ? schools in the country, a flower shop, a doctor's office, 2 dentist offices, a movie theater, a pool hall, 6 churches, 7 gas stations, a bank, shoe repair, 6 bars, 2 places that delivered beer, and bus service that came from Fredericktown to Mariana to Washington and back.
